info
The Chain of Rocks Bridge, spanning the Mississippi River between St. Louis, Missouri, and Madison, Illinois, is a historic Route 66 landmark. Opened in 1929, this 5,353-foot cantilever through-truss bridge is renowned for its unique 22-degree bend, designed to accommodate river navigation and bedrock limitations. Initially a toll bridge, it became part of Route 66 in 1936, serving motorists until its closure to vehicles in 1970. Restored and reopened in 1999 for pedestrians and cyclists, the bridge now connects over 300 miles of trails, offering scenic views and a tangible link to America's transportation history.
