Info: The USS North Carolina (BB-55), nicknamed the "Showboat," is a World War II battleship now preserved as a museum in Wilmington, North Carolina. Commissioned in 1941, she was the first new U.S. battleship in nearly two decades and participated in every major Pacific campaign, earning 15 battle stars—the most of any U.S. battleship during the war. After decommissioning in 1947, a statewide campaign saved her from scrapping, and she was dedicated as a memorial in 1962. Visitors can explore the ship's decks, gun turrets, and crew quarters, gaining insight into naval history and honoring the over 10,000 North Carolinians who died in WWII.
